Indian System of Medicine – Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidha and Homeopathy

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]I[/dropcap]ndia  is a home of a multi-cultured society, thus a multi faculty science in general and a multi faculty treatment ideology in particular. Ministry of health and family welfare of govt of India has created its department called AYUSH under which almost all system of Indian medicines functions for the education and training.

AYUSH_Logo1Department of Indian Systems of Medicine & Homeopathy (ISM & H) was incepted in 1995 and re-named as Department of AYUSH, the Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy in 2003 having intention of providing attention to development of Education & Research in Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy systems. The AYUSH department continuing to lay emphasis of AYUSH educational standards, quality control and standardization of drugs, improving the availability of medicinal plant material, research and development and awareness generation about the efficacy of these systems of healing domestically and internationally.

AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidha & Homeopathy): A short description

Ayurveda:

Ayurveda means the “Science of Life”, it is a recognized healing science in Indian continent and around the globe and is traced to have been supported by the Vedic text. Ayurveda is based on the concept of imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kaph gives Dosh or diseases.

There are around 250 college/institutions across the country offering education in Ayurveda. The basic degree is Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (B.A.M.S). Some institutions offer postgraduate education leading to MD/MS(Ayurveda) also.

Yoga:

Yoga is a physical practices to attain peace and keeping away the ailments. Originated and rooted in Indian continent it is also backed by the ancient text.

Unani:

Unani medicine first arrived in India around 12th or 13th century with establishment of Delhi Sultanate around 1206-1527. Unani System of Medicine was initially developed by Hakim Ibn Sina aka Avicenna in the west. This system works on the concept of four humours; Balgam(Phlegm), Dam(Blood), Safra(Yellow Bile) and Sauda(Black Bile).

There are around 40 colleges/institutions across the country offering education in Unani Medicine. The basic degree is Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (B.U.M.S). Some institutions offer postgraduate education leading to MD/MS(Unani) also.

Siddha:

Siddha is said to be one of the oldest know system of medicine to human kind. It generally flourished in South India. Siddha also work on the concept of Vata, Pitta and Kaph gives Dosh or diseases.

There are around 10 colleges/institutions across the country offering education in Siddha Medicine. The basic degree is Bachelor of Siddha Medicine & Surgery (B.S.M.S). Some institutions offer postgraduate education leading to MD/MS(Siddha) also.

Homeopathy:

Like cures Like” is basic doctrine of Homeopathy which was said to have been coined by Samuel Hehnemann in around 1796. The doctrine states that the substance that causes a symptom in a healthy human can heal the similar symptom in sick human.

In homeopathy the basic education being offered is Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery (B.H.M.S). Some institutions offer postgraduate education leading to MD(Hom) in different specialities.

The Homeopathic education, training and practices are regulated by Central Council of Homeopathy, Govt. Of India

AYUSH regulations:

Ayush education, training and practices are generally regulated by the Central Council of Indian Medicines(CCIM), Govt of India.
