Gorakhpur is located at the eastern part of the Northern State of India, Uttar Pradesh. With Madan Mohan Maviya Engineering college turning in to a full-fledged technical University on December 01, 2013, Gorakhpur has now been a main seat of learning in the purvanchal. Apart from the famous Duo the Deen Dyal Upadhyay University and Madan Mohan Malviya Technological University, it houses Baba Raghav Das Medical College which was established in 1969.  World renowned Gita Press is also located in the city which prints and distributes the Hindu religious text worldwide.

Gorakhpur is the administrative headquarter of the division. Currently the division consists of the districts of Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar and Maharajganj.

Gorakhnath temple also is an attraction having been located in the city apart from different religious sites some being Imabara and Dargah.

Before independence major part of the state was with Gorakhpur. Later the new districts were started coming into the existence from being separated from Gorakhpur district. Basti came into the existence from Gorakhpur in 1865 and Deoria in 1946.

Since the DDU was incepted in 1965, it is taking care of education needs of people of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining part of Bihar and Nepal.

Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College which is now Madan Mohan Malviya University of Technology was established in 1962, has been a pioneer in engineering and science education in the state and to some extent in the nation.

Apart from the two above universities, there are many degree colleges affiliated to DDU University catering the higher educational needs of the masses.

For Secondary education, Gorakhpur has a fair number of High Schools and Intermediate colleges, having been administered privately or publicly throughout the city.

A good network of basic and primary school is scattered across city.

For national and state level competitive exams for admission to different streams of course of study are also are dealt here in the city, IIT JEE, AIPMT, CPMT, IAS, PCS etc. are to name some.

Since Gorakhpur is well connected to rest of the state, adjoining states and to the nation, it attracts students from around most of the districts of the Purvanchal.
